Kids Clothing Care Tips: How to Wash and Maintain Children's Clothes
Children's clothes take a beating. From breakfast spills to outdoor adventures, from muddy school days to pasta-sauce-covered dinner nights, kids find ways to test every garment they own. The good news is that with the right washing and care habits, quality children's clothing — especially cotton — can last through an entire season of growth and several hundred washes without losing its softness or shape. This practical guide covers everything Indian parents need to know.
Read the Care Label First
Every garment has a care label inside (usually at the back neck or inside the waistband) that provides specific instructions from the manufacturer. These instructions are based on the specific fabric composition and dye type used in that garment, so following them is the single most reliable way to avoid damaging the clothing.
Common care symbols you will see: a bucket with water (wash), a bucket with an X (do not wash in machine, hand wash only), a triangle (bleach, with an X if bleach-free only), a square with a circle inside (machine dryer), an iron (with or without dots indicating temperature), and a circle (dry clean).
For 100% cotton children's clothing from quality brands like Littlekart, care is generally straightforward: machine wash cold or warm, gentle cycle, no bleach, tumble dry low or air dry. The pre-shrunk treatment means the garment will not shrink significantly even after many washes.
Washing Children's Cotton Clothes: Step by Step
Sort by colour: Wash new, brightly coloured children's clothing separately for the first two or three washes. Some dye transfer is normal in new garments, and washing reds, blues, and other deep colours with whites or light colours in the first wash can cause discolouration. After a few washes, the dye stabilises and mixed loads are fine.
Turn inside out: Turning pajamas and printed clothing inside out before washing protects the outer surface and any printed designs from friction with other garments in the machine. This simple step significantly extends the life of printed patterns.
Use cold or lukewarm water: Cold water (20-30°C) is gentler on cotton fibers and elastic, prevents colour fading, and is energy-efficient. Warm water (up to 40°C) is appropriate for heavily soiled items or when hygiene is a concern. Hot water above 60°C will damage cotton fibers and elastic over time.
Choose the right detergent: Use a mild, baby-safe liquid detergent for young children's clothing. Liquid detergents dissolve fully in cool water and do not leave the residue that powder detergents sometimes do. Avoid detergents containing optical brighteners, bleach, or heavy fragrances for children's sleepwear and items worn against skin.
Gentle cycle: Use the gentle or delicate cycle for children's clothing in a front-loading machine. Top-loading machines with agitators are harder on fabric and elastic. If using a top-loading machine, choose the shortest available cycle and lower spin speed.
Treating Common Kids' Stains
Food stains (curry, dal, pasta sauce): Rinse immediately with cold water — never hot, which sets the stain. Apply a small amount of liquid dish soap and work it gently into the fabric. Let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes, then rinse and wash normally. For stubborn turmeric (haldi) stains, a paste of baking soda and water left on the stain for 15 minutes before rinsing works well.
Mud and grass: Let mud dry completely before treating — rubbing wet mud spreads it further into the fabric. Brush off the dried mud, then soak the area in diluted white vinegar (equal parts vinegar and water) for 10 minutes before washing normally. Grass stains respond well to a pre-treatment of liquid detergent applied directly and left for 20 minutes.
Oil and ghee: Apply cornstarch or talcum powder to the fresh stain immediately to absorb the oil. Leave for 15 minutes, then brush off and apply liquid dish soap. Wash as normal. Do not rub an oil stain with water first — this can spread the oil.
What never to do: Never use bleach on coloured or printed children's clothing — it destroys dye and weakens cotton fibers. Never put a stained garment in the dryer before the stain is fully removed — heat permanently sets most stains. Check before drying every time.
Drying Children's Clothes: Best Practices in India
India's climate makes air drying the most practical choice for most households and most months of the year. Air drying in shade preserves cotton fabric, elastic, and colours significantly better than machine drying. Direct sunlight fades colours over time, though it does provide natural antibacterial action which can be useful for items like baby clothing and underwear.
Hang cotton clothing by the shoulders or lay flat to dry rather than hanging from a corner or bottom, which can stretch the garment out of shape while damp.
During the monsoon months when air drying takes longer and humidity is high, ensure clothes are fully dry before putting them away. Storing even slightly damp clothing leads to musty odors and mildew that are very difficult to remove from cotton.
If using a dryer, select the lowest heat setting and remove clothing while slightly damp to finish air drying. This prevents heat damage to elastic waistbands and reduces fiber damage from high heat cycles.
Seasonal Storage for Kids' Clothes
India's seasonal extremes mean most families store seasonal clothing for months at a time. Always wash and dry completely before storage — storing with even faint food residue attracts insects and causes stains to set permanently.
Use sealed bags or airtight containers for storage. For cotton specifically, a fabric storage bag (breathable) is slightly better than a plastic bag, which can trap residual moisture and create conditions for mildew. Place natural moth repellents (camphor or neem leaves) inside storage bags rather than synthetic moth balls, which leave chemical residue on fabric.
When taking clothing out of storage at the start of a new season, wash once before wearing to remove storage odors and any dust. This is especially important for sleepwear that will be worn directly against skin all night. Shop Littlekart on Amazon for premium cotton kids pajamas that are built to last through proper care.
